How to Handle eBay Returns When the Item Shipped from Amazon
returnsoperationscustomer service
Returns are the part of dropshipping nobody plans for. The buyer sends the item back to you, but you never touched it, and it didn't come from your address.
First, understand your obligations
Your eBay return policy sets the terms for "changed my mind" returns: you can offer none, or returns where the buyer or you pay shipping. But if the item is faulty, wrong or not as described, eBay's Money Back Guarantee lets the buyer return it for a refund even if your policy says no returns, and you're responsible for the return shipping. Read your own policy, and eBay's current guarantee terms, before you respond.
The practical flow
- Reply quickly and approve valid returns. Dragging it out turns a return into a case.
- Decide the return route. Options are returning the item to Amazon (start a return there if it's within Amazon's window), having the buyer keep it with a partial refund for low-value items, or receiving it yourself.
- Refund promptly once the return is in motion or confirmed, according to your policy.
- Track the loss. Add refunds and unreturned items into your profit math.
Reduce returns before they happen
- Make the listing match the Amazon listing exactly: size, color, quantity and what's included.
- Skip categories with high return rates while you're starting out.
- Set realistic delivery expectations.
