eBay Handling Time vs Delivery Estimate: What Dropshippers Should Promise
shippinghandling timeoperations
Two clocks start when a buyer pays: your handling time and the carrier's transit time. Confusing them is how new sellers get late-shipment defects.
The difference
- Handling time: how long you take to ship the item (for a dropshipper: to place the Amazon order and get a tracking number onto the eBay order).
- Delivery estimate: handling time plus transit. eBay shows buyers this window.
Why dropshippers struggle
You're depending on a third party. After you order, Amazon has to process and ship before a tracking number exists. If your handling time is 1 day but Amazon takes 2 to produce tracking, you'll miss your own promise.
How to set it safely
- Look at Amazon's processing time for your typical items.
- Set a handling time that covers placing the order and getting tracking, with a buffer.
- Upload tracking promptly, ideally automatically.
- If you'll miss it, message the buyer before the deadline.
A slightly longer honest promise beats a short broken one. More in late shipment rate and Lesson 6.
