When to Upgrade Your eBay Store Subscription (and When Not To)

ebay storefeesupgradegrowth

An eBay Store subscription is a monthly fee in exchange for more free listings and a lower final value fee in many categories. It's not automatically worth it. It pays off when your volume is high enough that the savings exceed the fee.

What the tiers look like

At the time of writing, US store tiers run roughly: Starter around $5-8 a month, Basic around $22-28, Premium around $60-75, Anchor around $300-350, with lower prices if you commit annually. Free-listing allotments rise by tier (very roughly 250, 1,000, 10,000 and 25,000). Fees and allotments change, so confirm on eBay's store fees page before deciding.

What you actually get

The break-even test

Do this with your own numbers:

  1. Count your active listings and compare it to the free allotment on your current plan. Any listing over it costs an insertion fee.
  2. Estimate monthly sales and apply the fee reduction on the next tier up.
  3. Add the insertion-fee savings and the final value fee savings.
  4. Upgrade if savings are above the extra subscription cost, with some margin for months that run slow.
