Are eBay Promoted Listings Worth It for Dropshippers?

advertisingfeeslistings

Promoted listings let you pay a percentage of the sale price for more visibility. For a high-margin seller they can be a growth lever. For a dropshipper on a 10-15% margin, they can erase the profit.

How it works

You choose an ad rate. You pay it only when a buyer clicks a promoted listing and buys it within the attribution window. A higher rate can mean more exposure.

The dropshipper's problem

If your net margin is 12% and you promote at 5%, your profit just fell by more than a third. Add a price increase from Amazon and you're in the red. Promoting only makes sense on listings with enough room to absorb the fee.

A safe way to test

  1. Pick listings with healthy margins and stable Amazon prices.
  2. Start with a low ad rate and watch net profit per sale, not clicks.
  3. Turn off listings where the ad-attributed sales don't beat the cost.
  4. Keep a record of ad fees per order so profit math stays honest.

Pair this with your margin calculation so ad cost is never invisible.
