Sales Tax and Dropshipping: What You Actually Owe and When

taxlegalcompliance

You sold a $25 item on eBay, collected $2 in sales tax from the buyer, and remitted it to your state. On paper, taxes are handled. In reality, you've likely missed obligations in 4–5 other states depending on where your storage is, where Amazon ships from, and increasingly complex nexus rules. Here's what actually matters.

The rules that changed

Before 2018, only sellers with physical presence (a warehouse, an office) in a state owed sales tax there. Wayfair changed that: now online sellers owe tax in most states based on sales volume alone (usually $100k+ in annual sales, but some states are $10k+). Even before hitting the threshold, many states require registration — which is free but mandatory.

What dropshippers actually owe

What to do now

Register in your home state immediately (free, no cost). For other states, audit your sales volume and source locations — if you're hitting the threshold anywhere, register. Use eBay's tax-collection feature for all states and track what's actually being remitted so you catch gaps. Honestly, bring an accountant in once you're doing over $50k in annual sales — the savings from proper structure and estimated tax planning usually pay for themselves in one year.
